  • Chauntry House Restaurant, Bray-on-Thames, Berkshire SL6 2AB. Tel: +44 1628 673991. The country charm of the setting is reflected in the pretty restaurant, which overlooks the garden. The menu offers classic combinations with a modern twist.
  • Frederick’s Hotel Restaurant, Shoppenhangers Road, Maidenhead, Berkshire SL6 2PZ. Tel: +44 1628 581000. Very much larger than life, the excellent cuisine is accompanied by a short, high quality wine list, while the exceptional service is a bonus.
  • Rose and Crown Restaurant, Woodside, Windsor Forest, Winkfield, Berkshire SL4 2DP. Tel: +44 1344 882051. A two-hundred-year-old building, now housing a small restaurant. This is an archetypal British pub complete with a cheery atmosphere, while the cooking is simple and robust.
  • Stirrups Country House Restaurant, Maidens Green, Bracknell, Berkshire RG42 6LD. Tel: +44 1344 882284. This restaurant has a rustic feel, with bare beams, a real fire and polished wood tables. The contemporary menu caters for most tastes, while dishes include grills, vegetarian options and exciting combinations.
  • The Fat Duck Restaurant, High Street, Bray, Berkshire SL6 2AQ. Tel: +44 1628 580333. Offering terrific culinary combinations, the revamped menu is daring in offering no less than seven courses with choices only at what amount to starters, main courses and desserts.
  • Waterside Inn, Ferry Road, Bray, Berkshire SL6 2AT. Tel: +44 16 2862 0691. The one best word to describe this justly celebrated restaurant would be "Serene". Serving classic French cuisine, dishes like pike quenelle with langoustine tails would be hard to find elsewhere in the country.

The light decor, high ceilings and arched windows give an air of grandeur to what is one of several eating options at Foxhills Resort. The menu is British based and the cuisine is served in elegant surroundings.
  • Latymer Restaurant, Pennyhill Park Hotel, London Road, Bagshot, Surrey GU19 5EU. Tel: +44 1276 471774. Steeped in tradition, the Latymer Restaurant is famed for its hospitality and French influenced British cuisine. The menu exhibits admirable imagination and flair.
  • Nutfield Priory, Nutfield, Redhill, Surrey RH1 4EL. Tel: +44 1737 824400. An imposing old building houses the Cloisters restaurant. Service and presentation is fittingly formal with a grandly presented menu and quiet, respectful serving staff.
  • The Dining Room, 59A High Street, Reigate, Surrey RH2 9AE. Tel: +44 1737 226650. The interior is smart and modern in style, as is the menu. A variety of dishes, blending European and Oriental ideas are on offer, while diners should also look out for the impressive selection of breads.

  • Eastwell Manor Restaurant, Eastwell Park, Boughton Lees, Ashford, Kent TN25 4HR. Tel: +44 1233 213000. Set in a 16th-century manor house, the menu is short and traditional but it packs a powerful punch, with the main courses and desserts being particularly excellent.
  • Kennel Holt Hotel Restaurant, Goudhurst Road, Cranbrook, Kent TN17 2PT. Tel: +44 1580 712032. A lovely manor house, the dining room is just as the setting would suggest - bare beams, open walls and log fires, while the menu makes impressive use of local produce.
  • Rankin’s Restaurant, The Street, Sissinghurst, Kent TN17 2JH. Tel: +44 1580 713964. A highly recommended husband and wife operation with a relaxed atmosphere, the weekly menus and Sunday lunch follow a sensible fixed-price policy without supplements.
  • Soho South Restaurant, 23 Stone Street, Cranbrook, Kent TN17 3HF. Tel: +44 1580 714666. A timber-clad building dating back to 1530, today it houses a welcoming, bistro style restaurant. The wooden floor and bottled herbs set the scene for a rustic style of cooking, which is European in scope but rooted in France.
  • St. Crispin Inn, The Street, Worth, Sandwich, Kent CT14 0DF. Tel: +44 1304 612081. Set at the end of a dead-end village lane, this delightful inn boasts a carvery and char-grill, as well as summer barbeques.
  • Wallett’s Court Country House Restaurant, Westcliffe, Dover, Kent CT15 6EW. Tel: +44 1304 852424. Formed from a cluster of medieval buildings, the dining room offers many period features from open fires to carved oak beams. Seasonal menus are complimented by a chef's set speciality menu.
  • West House Restaurant, 28 High Street, Biddenden, Kent TN27 8AH. Tel: +44 1580 291341. A labour of love for the owners and it shows in the approach to culinary preparation and service. When the food arrives it reflects the devotion, enthusiasm and respect for ingredients.

  • Club Gascon, 57 West Smithfield, London EC1A 9DS. Tel: +44 20 7796 0600. The menu style, with a multitude of mini-courses, is just the thing to excite even the most jaded palate. The surroundings too are an eye-opener, deeply cool with marbled walls and a stunning feature bar with bold colours.
  • Gaudi Restaurante, 63 Clerkenwell Road, London EC1M 5PT. Tel: +44 20 7608 3220. Chef Nacho Martinez was one of the best modern Spanish cooks in Madrid before he moved to London where he is offering the sort of light and vivid Spanish food rarely found outside of the country.
  • Heather’s Restaurant, 74 McMillan Street, London SE8 3HA. Tel: +44 20 8691 6665. A vegetarian restaurant with a beautiful walled garden, everything except the ice cream is made on the premises and it boasts an excellent organic wine list.
  • Laicram Thai Restaurant, 1 Blackheath Grove, Blackheath, London SE3 0DD. Tel: +44 20 8852 4710. A diminutive cottage-like restaurant with carved wooden panels, the menu is lengthy with plenty to hold one's interest such as chicken slices blended with herbs, lemon grass, lemon juice, chilli and coconut.
  • North Pole Bar and Restaurant, 131 Greenwich High Road, Greenwich, London SE10 8JA. Tel: +44 20 8853 3020. Offering fine views of the Thames and the Millennium Dome, this fashionable bar and restaurant, contrary to what the name suggests, is one of the hottest places in town. The cuisine exhibits plenty of style.
  • Quality Chop House, 94 Farringdon Road, London EC1 3EA. Tel: +44 20 7837 5093. An original Victorian restaurant where black and white tiles, booths and plenty of frosted glass betray its origins. An eclectic menu offers lobster and rocket salad, grilled kippers and poached egg.
  • Tatsuso Restaurant, 32 Broadgate Circle, London EC1M 6BT. Tel: +44 20 7638 5863. This Japanese restaurant comprises a variety of dining areas - go traditional in the downstairs sushi bar or should you anticipate the need for distraction, the upstairs portion affords a view of the chef at work.

  • Hanbury Manor Hotel Restaurant, Ware, Hertfordshire SG12 0SD. Tel: +44 1920 487722. It’s surprising in such a grand hotel, to find a small and intimate restaurant with unstuffy service. The menu looks towards France for inspiration. Be prepared to linger over your meal, with a superb wine list to help.
  • Ibbetson's Restaurant at Down Hall, Hatfield Heath, Bishop’s Stortford, Hertfordshire CM22 7AS. Tel: +44 1279 731441.This restaurant is highly recommended though quite expensive. You should sample the pan-roasted turbot with leek and oyster flan, or the medallions of beef.
