WEATHER

Much like Ireland or Scotland, visiting golfers must be prepared for all sorts of weather when visiting England or Wales. And being a relatively large island, influenced by a number of different things, the weather throughout Great Britain can vary quite considerably from one part of the country to another.

The average annual temperature at low altitudes varies between about 8.5°C and 11°C, with the highest values occurring near coastal areas. However, average annual temperatures vary greatly with altitude and in general, mean temperatures decrease by about 1°C for every 200-metre increase in height. Winter temperatures are influenced to a large extent by the surface temperatures of the surrounding waters and as such, there is little to choose between January and February as the coldest month. July is usually the warmest month, with highest summer temperatures occurring in more central regions, away from the cooling influence of the Atlantic Ocean.

Please note that the below charts show the relevant averages for the midlands (Birmingham). Temperatures, rainfall, sunrise and sunset times can vary marginally for other regions north and south but overall, the charts give a fairly accurate picture.

Average daily sunshine reaches a maximum in May or June, with the key factor being the length of day. The sunniest parts are along the south coast of England, where the average annual figures are around 1,750 hours of sunshine, while the dullest areas are the mountainous regions. Rainfall throughout England and Wales varies widely but typically, precipitation occurs about one day in every three. The wettest parts (the Lake District, Pennines and Snowdonia) can often have an average rainfall of over 2,000 mm, while parts of the southeast have an average of only 700 mm.

The hours of daylight in England and Wales also vary considerably between both summer and winter and indeed north and south. For golfers, this can be quite an important factor, especially for those who plan on playing 36 holes per day.
